A Clinical Observation of Cephalexin (Kefacin) in the Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections.



Abstract
New bactericidal agent, cephalexin was administered in the treatment of urinary tract infections and evaluated in the Department of Urology during the period from May to August 1974. These patients were examined by physical and microscopic study.
The causative agents were all 13 groups; N. gonorrhea-12, Esch. coli-9, coagulase positive Staphy¡þlococcus-4, Pseudomonas aeruginosa-4, Corynebacterium spp. -3, alpha hemolytic Streptococcus-3. Klebsiella aeruginosa-3, Coliform bacilli-3, Diplococcus pneumonia-2, Paracolon bacilli-1, Lactobacillus¡þ1, in total, 145 strains.
Dosage for gonorrhea was scheduled 3.0 gram single dosage orally with probenecid 1.0 gram 30-60 minutes prior to cephalexin administration
Other urinary tract infection dosage was variable from 1.0-2.0 gram per day for 7 to 35 days. The effectiveness on individnal disease was
1. gonococcal urethritis cured in 9 cases, recurrent in 1 case, gonococcal vaginitis cured in 2 cases all.
2. non-gonococcal urethritis cured in 4 cases, improved in 5 cases, recurrent in 1 case, no response in 2 cases.
3. pyelonephritis cured in 5 cases, improved in 1 case, no response in 1 case.
4. cystitis cured in 7 cases, improved in 4 cases, no response in 3 cases. The overall cure rate was 83% excluding the Pseudomonas infection.
Side effects were transiently noticed in 3 patients, such as fever, urticaria, hey lache, and tinnitus.
It is disclosed that Cephalexin is an effective drug for urinary tract infection.
